The area that is now Maspeth was once home to 13 Indian tribes on Long Island. The name came from the Mespeatches Indians, which translated means "at the bad waterplace" because of the stagnant swamps in the area. In the 17th century, the area was explored by the Dutch and the English. The Dutch bought the land that is now Queens and Maspeth was settled in 1642. It would later become the first English town in Queens.
