The Garden was founded in 1891 on part of the Belmont Estate, a piece of land that was formerly owned by tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard. After a fundraising campaign by Columbia University, Nathaniel Lord Britton was successful in creating the garden.
The garden today
The New York Botanical Garden is located at East 200th Street and Kazimiroff Boulevard with your New York rental car. They contain 48 different gardens and plant collections. You could easily spend the day admiring the landscaping and plants. There are American beeches, cherry, birch, tulip, and white ash trees that are more than two centuries old. One of the highlights that you will want to check out before leaving in your New York rental car is the 1890s vintage wrought-iron framed greenhouse. There is also the Peggy Rockefeller memorial rose garden, a Japanese rock garden, and a conifer collection that are interesting sights. At the heart of the Garden is more than 50 acres of virgin woodlands that represent the last stretch of original forest that covered New York City before the arrival of European settlers.
Looking towards the future
When you visit New York Botanical Garden with your New York rental car, you may see the Pfizer Plant Research Laboratory, a major research institution that opened in 2006. The studies here focus on how genes function in plant development. They hope to answer Darwin's "abominable mystery", which is when, where, and why flowering plants emerge. They also study DNA as evidence of evolutionary history and relationships among plant species.
Stay at the park
Also located at Bronx Park is the Bronx Zoo. The zoo first opened its doors to the public on November 8, 1899 with 843 animals in 22 exhibits. Today that has grown to more than 4000 animals housed in a series of Beaux-Arts pavilions. Some of the exhibits in the Bronx Zoo that you can visit with your New York rental car include seeing Western lowland gorillas in the Congo Gorilla Forest, visiting the Himalayan Highlands, or sweating it out in the Asian rain forest. The Himalayan Highlands exhibit is open all year and will take you to the mountaintops of Nepal without a sherpa. It is a one-acre winding path that will take you to see some of Asia's most endangered species such as the snow leopard, red pandas, Temminck's tragopan, and white-naped cranes.
