New York City Rental Car and an Ozone Park Overview

Ozone Park is a neighborhood in southwestern Queens on the border of Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, Howard Beach, and Brooklyn that you can visit with your New York City car rental. It is bordered by Atlantic Avenue to the north, 108th Street to the east, South Conduit Avenue to the south, and Drew Street to the west on the Brooklyn border.

An interesting idea

The area that is now Ozone Park that you can visit with your New York City car rental was once vast farmland. Housing was developed after the Long Island Railroad began service in the area in 1880 as part of the route from Long Island City to Howard Beach. The name was chosen because developers wanted to "lure buyers with the idea of refreshing breezes blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean to a park-like community".

A colored history

Ozone Park is widely perceived as a center for mafia activities, but when you visit with your New York City car rental you can feel safe in your everyday activities. Some of the colored history of the area include crimes associated with the Lucchese family, which is one of the "Five Families" that controls organized crime in New York City. John Gotti was also a prominent figure here at one time, co-opting the Bergin Hunt and Fish Club on 101st Avenue. There is no sign on the building to indicate what the purpose of this building is for, and most of the time it is empty these days.

Take to the races

The Aqueduct Racetrack is found in Ozone Park with your New York City car rental. The racetrack first opened in 1894 and was rebuilt in 1959. There are few important races run here, mainly because there is usually unfavorable weather conditions during the racing season. However, it is still an interesting place to visit with your New York City car rental. On weekends you will find a flea market here in the north parking lot. Pope John Paul II once said mass here, during his visit in October 1995.

In May 2007 there were reports that indicated that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer wanted to close the track and sell it to developers at the end of 2007 when the lease expired. Belmont Race Track is only nine miles away in Nassau County, and would be able to have video lotto machines that are now operating at Aqueduct. However, the track is still there, as many people in the area prefer it since there is a more "blue collar" feel and it is close to home.
